Detailed Company Profile & Overview

Amazon is a global pioneer in e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence. Guided by four core principles—customer obsession rather than competitor focus, passion for invention, commitment to operational excellence, and long-term thinking—Amazon has grown to become one of the most influential technology companies in the world. The technology built here is designed to operate at an unprecedented global scale, serving hundreds of millions of active customers, sellers, and developers.

The Last Mile Logistics team is one of the most critical components of Amazon's supply chain. This team is responsible for the highly complex journey of a package from the final delivery station to the customer's hands. The Under-The-Roof (UTR) software engineering team builds the core systems that manage physical operations inside these delivery stations. This includes package sorting, route planning, driver dispatching, and real-time tracking systems. Working in this division means your code will directly influence the efficiency, speed, and cost of global deliveries, making a tangible impact on the everyday lives of people worldwide.

Detailed Job Description and Responsibilities

As a Software Development Engineer on the Last Mile UTR team, you will be responsible for designing and implementing software solutions that solve complex physical and digital logistical challenges. You will work alongside a highly collaborative, cross-disciplinary team of product managers, data scientists, and senior engineers to translate business requirements into robust, production-ready code.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • System Design & Architecture: Conceive, design, and implement highly scalable, fault-tolerant, and low-latency distributed systems that can handle massive spikes in transaction volumes.
  • Coding & Implementation: Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code using modern programming languages. You will start with broadly defined problems and engineer robust solutions.
  • Data Storage & Querying: Build and optimize distributed storage, indexing, and query systems that are cost-effective, secure, and easy to manage.
  • Predictive Modeling: Create and integrate solutions that run predictions on distributed systems, leveraging machine learning and data analytics at scale.
  • Agile Collaboration: Work actively in an agile development environment, participating in daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and code reviews to ensure high-quality software delivery.

Detailed Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this highly competitive role, candidates must meet the following educational and professional criteria:

  • Educational Qualification: A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or an equivalent technical discipline from a recognized university.
  • Professional Experience: Minimum of 1+ years of professional, non-internship software development experience. Candidates should have a proven track record of delivering production-grade software.
  • Academic Performance: A strong academic record with a solid understanding of core computer science fundamentals is highly preferred.

Required Skills & Preferred Qualifications

Amazon looks for engineers who possess a deep technical foundation combined with a passion for continuous learning. The key technical and soft skills required for this role include:

  • Programming Proficiency: Strong hands-on experience in at least one modern object-oriented programming language such as Java, C++, C#, or Python.
  • Data Structures & Algorithms: Deep understanding of fundamental computer science concepts, including data structures, algorithms, runtime complexity (Big O notation), and space optimization.
  • Distributed Systems: Familiarity with cloud computing concepts, microservices architecture, and distributed databases is highly advantageous.
  • Problem Solving: Excellent analytical and logical reasoning skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and design solutions for loosely defined problems.
  • Communication & Teamwork: Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and articulate technical concepts clearly.
  • Selection Process & Interview Workflow

The selection process at Amazon is rigorous and designed to evaluate both your technical capabilities and your alignment with Amazon's Leadership Principles. The typical hiring workflow consists of the following stages:

    1. Online Assessment (OA): A preliminary round focusing on coding challenges, data structures, algorithms, and system design concepts, along with a work style assessment.
    2. Technical Phone Screen: A 1-hour interview with an Amazon engineer focusing on live coding, problem-solving, and basic system design.
    3. Onsite/Virtual Loop Interviews: A series of 4 to 5 comprehensive interviews covering:
      • Coding and Data Structures
      • System Design and Architecture
      • Amazon's Leadership Principles (behavioral questions focusing on ownership, customer obsession, and delivering results)
